Benn Jordan is a tech guy with You Tube channel. He has shown how easy it is to break into the cameras. I don’t like big brother watching. I’m not sure I’m bought into the benefits outweigh the cost. We have found missing Alzheimer’s patients who are lost while driving (yikes) and solved an issue the city was having with stolen vehicles (suburban problem. Most vehicles were unlocked with keys inside the vehicle). But, the capability to abuse the data is not small. The new Ice budget scares me. Anything that might help them accomplish their stated goal is a problem.

It is an interesting discussion as the rebuttal is what you dont want to find lost Alzheimer's people? OR stolen cars?

No, those are very legitimate reasons to keep the Flock cameras. My concern is the cost to our privacy. 98 searches were made in the last 30 days by our police deportment. Significantly more than that were made by other departments in the state. We do not share federally. our police department seems to have procedures in place to prevent unlawful searches of the data by our officers. I don’t know if the same is true for other departments. I would have supported their installation when we had the stolen vehicle problem, but times have changed. NPSM-7 is real and the definition of what this current administration considers domestic terrorism is frightening. The creation of concentration camps instead of hiring more immigration lawyers and judges indicates to me that deportation is not the mission. Flock cameras had a place in normalville. Times are changing and I fear they will be used for bad instead of good.

Small town life (everyone knew everything about everybody thanks to gossip) magnified, monetized, and expanded—-it seems. Can be useful “Did you know your son put nails in neighbors’ car tires?” Or helpful (“She’s all alone now, let’s keep an eye out for her”) or ? No one is truly Big City anonymous now. It’s a trade off & I don’t know the answer.

This is an important topic and I’m glad you’re covering it. I hate the surveillance cameras. We have them in my town outside of Cleveland in several busy intersections and at all the public school entrances. Personally, I feel citizen surveillance, and specifics to how it’s used, should be something we vote on in our local elections.
